Some Common Injuries

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Some of the most common injuries occur to those parts of the body that are also the hardest to repair.

Many people who are using resistance training as their preferred form of fitness, will injure their shoulders or lower back more often than other parts of their body.

The shoulders are quite susceptible to injury as they are activated with many different exercises and some of these exercises such as the bench press can involve the use of substantial weight.

It is imperative that you do sufficient warm up exercises for your shoulders before you even start to lift the lightest of weights. Shoulder injuries can take a very long time to mend and as they are used in so many exercises, it will stop or hinder you from doing most upper body workouts.

Using weight machines can reduce the incidence of injury as the movement is controlled, but you will be missing out in the strengthening that occurs with all the other muscles that are used for balance and control when using free weights such as dumbbells and barbells.

As you age, it could be more beneficial to move from free weights to weight machines as we become more susceptible to injury as we age.

The lower back is another area of concern for many people both with resistance training and aerobic training. Some of the mass building exercises such as squats can place big loads on the lower back and unless you are performing the exercises with the correct movements, you will always be exposed to the risk of injury.

Strengthening the abdominal muscles will help to support your lower back and this will also help to reduce the chance of injury to your back.

This is where a professional fitness trainer can help to ensure you are doing the exercises correctly.

Warning: Do Not Read Unless You’re Over 40!

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

Okay, now remember, I said this is for people Over 40 ONLY.

If you’re younger than 40, and you get offended by anything I say, tough tutus, you weren’t invited to this party anyway!

Now then… I want to tell you what happened to me the other day…

I bought an exercise DVD because I’m tired of being tired. I want to get into shape, I want to fit into my clothes and I want energy - LOTS of it!

So I put on my old sweats, put on the DVD, and here was this barely 20 something girl in the shape of a toothpick, grinning menacingly ( I swear!) at the camera like she was going to take a bite out of it. Or me!

“Don’t worry,” she says. “We’re going to start out sloooowwww.” Grin, grin, grin.

Barely five minutes into her jumping/gyrating/vibrating routine, I collapsed on the couch, completely confused, frustrated and ANNOYED. Maybe, just maybe I could have kept up with her for awhile if something she did made SENSE.

But just when I was able to copy one of her moves, she was on to the next one like a frenzied Eveready rabbit.

“Okay,” she grins, “Put your right arm up and step with your left foot and put your left arm out and hop with your right leg while bending at the waist and touch your forehead to the floor and snap back up and whirl your arms while moving your legs out and in and then turn left and slide down and roll and back up and bend and touch your head to your butt and…”

Holy @#$%&^*!

Who exercises like this??? Not me. I’m over 40. I want to get in shape. I want to feel good, look good and have lots of energy.

I don’t need a barely 20s chicklet telling me, someone twice her age, how to get in shape. What she teaches might be fine for people her age.

I want to learn from someone MY age or older who is in the best shape of their lives, that knows what it’s like at 40, that things don’t work the same way anymore. Now THAT’S someone who can teach me how to be fit and feel great. Do you feel the same way?

I went online and started searching…and I think I’ve hit the mother lode. If you want to lose 10 pounds or 300 pounds, there is always someone to help you the right way. You can go from being…out of shape…pudgy…fat…obese…and really obese…to hotties who frankly look BETTER than that barely 20 “stick” in that useless DVD I paid $19.95 for!

And you know what?

…if they can do it…you and I can do it!

Here is some other help (click here).

Do You Need a Fitness Trainer

Friday, February 15th, 2008

If you are unsure what to do, or maybe need someone to motivate you, it might be time to consider hiring a trainer. A personal trainer can give you attention that you wouldn’t get with your membership at a gym. Personal attention will ensure that you follow through and perform all the exercises that are set for your fitness program. In addition to the motivational factors of having a fitness trainer, they will also be able to determine if you are performing any exercises incorrectly.

If you have your own home gym, they can work with you to devise a program that is best suited to your body type and the improvements that you want to make. Knowing that the fitness trainer will  turn up at a certain time each week, will also ensure that you are ready for a workout and more likely to continue with any program that you have started.

To find the best fitness trainer in your area, you should try to get recommendations from others, as this will be the only way you will know whether they will be worthy of you  investing your money in their instruction and services.

You can always hire them on a short-term basis until you are satisfied that they are qualified and right for you.

Many trainers have their own equipment, but having your own equipment will allow you to train at times when they aren’t around. You would just use the instructions you learned from your sessions with them.

You might need your trainer for only a short term to learn what you need to know, and to ensure you are doing the exercises correctly. Then you can continue under your own motivation. You can always call them back from time to time to go over the program and make adjustments based on your progress. At this point, you may even need a new and more challenging program, depending on how much you have advanced.

As with anything in life, having an experienced fitness trainer can reduce the time considerably that it takes to reach your goals.
