Setting Goals

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Most successful people find that setting goals is one of the most important parts of achieving those goals and this applies to almost everything in life including your ability to be successful with weight loss.

What you do have to realize however, is these goals need to be realistic and you need to believe that you can achieve them or you will be starting off on the wrong foot and failure will be imminent.

To make your goal achievable, you need to look at it over an extended period of time rather than believing that you can lose 15 pounds in a couple of weeks. While this might be possible, it is certainly a lot harder to achieve than to expect to lose that weight over the course of several months.

Keeping a diary helps a lot of people to achieve their goals as it helps to enforce the actions that are required to meet those goals on a daily basis. In your diary, you can record your body weight, the foods you’ve been eating, any supplements you have been taking and the results that you have been getting from these actions.

This helps you to readjust your goals and make changes to your fitness and nutrition as things change in the course of your weight loss program.

Within your major goal, you should also have short-term goals, and once again, these need to be realistic to keep you motivated. These short-term goals will change from time to time as during the course of your weight loss program, you will probably find that progress accelerates after certain stages of your plan.

Sometimes you will also plateau for a while where your weight loss will tend to slow down, and by having a diary, you will be able to look at those areas that you might be able to change to get over that plateau and continue to progress.

Keeping a Food Diary

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

When you are trying to lose weight, one of the smartest and easiest steps you can take is to keep a food diary. It may seem bothersome and time consuming at first, but it will be well worth the effort in the end. A food diary is just like what it sounds — a record of your daily food intake. You can keep track of many things or you can keep it simple, but in either case, this is a great way in which to help yourself stick to a weight loss plan.

There are a number of pieces of information you can track in your food diary. First, consider just listing your daily menu. This will help you actually see what you eat on any given day and will help you notice patterns of unhealthy eating that you never considered before. You can also record calories, protein, fiber, fat and other nutritional facts and data as well as portion size. If you truly want to use a diary format, you can also list the reasons why you’re eating other because of hunger, the cravings you experience and your feelings about your diet on any given day. It’s your diary, so do what suits you best!

When you start a food diary, keep in mind that you don’t have to keep a traditional journal by the bed with a lock and key. You can use whatever kind of recording and writing tools you like best. For some people, a plain ordinary notebook works fine. You can also keep a food diary on your computer. Simply open a word processing program and keep the icon on your desktop. Others like to use Excel or some other data entry program as they help quite a bit when it comes to adding totals at the end of the day. You can also keep your food diary on a laptop or palm pilot or slip a notebook into your bag during the day — whatever works best for your lifestyle.

Remember to update your food diary every day and review it at the end of each week in order to track your progress. It’s probably better to update every time you eat anything as that way you won’t forget anything that you ate.

As a incentive, you may wish to note when you hit certain weight loss goals. Also record, heaven forbid, when you gain weight in order to look for causes. You can show your diary to professionals to make sure that you are staying healthy with your weight loss plan.

Food diaries work great for many people so you should consider starting one today in order to help you lose the most weight possible.
